Multi-language – Junba for Yilala: An Instruction Book

Each year, young Ngarinyin, Worrorra and Wunambal dancers and singers, supported by elders, teach younger community members Junba choreography and practices. Junba for Yilala: An instruction book was written by Johnny Nyunjuma Divilli to provide young boys and young men with a resource to support this teaching and learning.

Junba for Yilala was written by Johnny Nyunjuma Divilli in 2017 and 2018 with contributions from Francis Nunburrngu Divilli, Rona Goonginda Charles, Matthew Dembalali Martin and Sally Treloyn.

In developing the book, Nyunjuma drew upon contributions from his brother Francis Nunburrngu Divilli, elder Matthew Dembalali Martin, Rona Goonginda Charles, and ethnomusicologist Sally Treloyn.

The book includes photos that document the revival of skin-based bodypaint designs and techniques by Divilli, Martin, and others, in 2016. The book also includes transcriptions of interviews with key teachers of Junba in the Ngarinyin community conducted by Divilli in 2016 and 2017 that document how they learned Junba as children.

Written by Johnny Nyunjuma Divilli with Francis Nunburrngu Divilli, Matthew Dembalali Martin and Rona Goonginda Charles.

Edited by Sally Treloyn.
